Microneedling and Microdermabrasion

January 2, 2025

What is microneedling and who does microneedling near me?

First things first what is microneedling and what should you look for?

Microneedling is a procedure performed by medical professionals and is a minimally invasive procedure designed to improve the appearance of your skin. A word of caution, many non-medical professionals offer micro needling, but you should be very careful in the provider you select. If you choose a medspa, ensure you are dealing with a credentialed medical professional such as a nurse practitioner. You should avoid any organization that offers microneedling where the provider does not have a medical background.

For the procedure, your healthcare provider uses thin needles throughout the specified area to make microscopic indentations through the top superficial layer of your skin. The damage caused by the needles stimulates collagen production, which is a key part of your skin’s healing process. Collagen decreases with age, and stimulating its production via micro needling helps keep your skin younger and smoother-looking.

At Body Scientific Aesthetics, most of our clients get microneedling on their face, but we also treat other areas, our second most popular treatment area is the neck as patients enjoy the reduction of visible lines at the neck and drooping skin in the neck area. Another area that our clients request for treatment is decollete. Microdermabrasion and micro needling are not limited to these areas, our nurse practitioner can treat other areas where you notice your skin has been damaged or where you feel your skin has visible signs of aging.

Microneedling vs. microdermabrasion: What’s the difference?

Microneedling and microdermabrasion are both used to improve skin appearance, however, microdermabrasion uses either a chemical or an abrasive sandpaper-like rubbing tool to remove dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. Microneedling goes deeper into your skin than microdermabrasion, so it’s effects are more noticeable and far-reaching as it works on your skin’s appearance from beneath the skin’s surface. Microneedling can treat conditions such as acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles, and rosacea which is not always achievable by scraping dead skin from the top layer of the skin. Micro needling will also continue to work to improve the skin’s condition over a long period of time so the skin continues to look smoother and younger over several weeks after a procedure.

Who can take advantage of microneedling?

First off, just about anyone can enjoy the benefits of microneedling! There are limitations based on certain conditions which we will discuss later. You could be a candidate for microneedling if you have:

  • Enlarged pores.
  • Fine lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Loose skin
  • Crepey (thin and wrinkled) skin.
  • Mild scars, such as acne scars or mild burns.
  • Uneven skin tone (hyperpigmentation or hypo pigmentation).
  • Stretch Marks on various parts of the body

Who should avoid microneedling?

  • Patients who are currently taking prescribed acne medication. Our medical provider will also ask about over-the-counter acne medication as well.
  • Patients on blood thinners aka anticoagulants to prevent clots.
  • Cancer Patients who are currently receiving chemo or radiation therapy.
  • Those who experience frequent skin rashes or cold sores.
  • If you are prone to Keloids meaning your skin forms hard, raised scars.
  • If you have moles, freckles, growths such as skin tags.
  • Patients that have other growths that may bleed or change in size or shape.
  • If you have an autoimmune condition such as psoriasis
  • If you suffer from eczema.

Procedure Details – The Body Scientific Aesthetics Difference

At Body Scientific Aesthetics, before we engage in the microneedling process, you will have a consultation with our nurse practitioner to assess your current medical conditions, your medications, and any other medical procedures you may be undergoing. Remember microneedling is a medical procedure, so beware of facilities where this is provided by an aesthetician or other non-medical professional. At Body Scientific Aesthetics, you will be assessed and treated by an experienced nurse practitioner for all procedures. After the assessment, a treatment plan will be designed for your individual skin care needs. Finally, pictures of the treatment area will be taken so that you can be provided with a before and after comparison. The differentiating factor is that the Body Scientific Aesthetics Microneedling procedure is a three in one combination treatment.  Our  DermaFrac™C system, technology takes dermal infusion to an unprecedented level with the combination of two additional proven modalities. Customize & combine microdermabrasion, micro-channeling aka micro-needling with a simultaneous infusion of high-grade serums for optimum results.

During your consultation is a great time to ask us questions. Even if you choose another provider, some great questions to ask are:

  • What are the risks?
  • Are there long or short-term side effects?
  • Does micro needling hurt?
  • How long before I see results?
  • Is there downtime after each procedure?
  • How many treatments will I require?

What happens during the microneedling procedure?

Your provider will clean your skin and apply an optional numbing cream such as lidocaine. We say optional numbing cream because the DermaFrac technology we use does not cause pain but produces maximum results.

Next,  we use a hand-held electric device to perform the actual microneedling procedure. You might feel warmth or a scratching sensation on your face once the micro needling starts. Deep microneedling might cause some minor bleeding. The procedure can take anywhere from 30 minutes to over an hour, depending on the size of the treatment area and the condition being treated. We provide you with a rejuvenating collagen healing mask during treatment to help relax, firm and calm the skin.

What happens after microneedling?

We perform Microneedling as an outpatient procedure, so you go home once it’s done. Your skin might be red or swollen depending on the depth of the procedure and this may last for a day or up to five days. We provide a post-procedure kit to take home with you along with discharge instructions and you may also consider an ice pack to help reduce irritation and discomfort if you need it. Most people can wear makeup the day after, you should also stay out of the sun as much as possible until your skin heals and wear sunscreen SPF 30 and above.

Risks of microneedling:

Microneedling is a safe procedure, and risks are minimal but risks may include:

  • Bruising.
  • Scarring.
  • Skin irritation
  • In very rare cases, skin can become infected

Benefits of microneedling:

Microneedling can help improve the appearance and texture of your skin. It can minimize stretch marks, scars, wrinkles and other skin concerns.

It doesn’t carry the risk of skin discoloration, unlike some facial rejuvenation procedures that use heat, light or lasers. This makes microneedling ideal for people with darker skin tones.

What can I expect after microneedling?

In the days and weeks after microneedling, you might notice that your skin burns or feels tight. Some people also have dry, flaking skin. These conditions are treatable and will improve with moisturizer and products from our post-procedure kit.

Most people need multiple microneedling treatments to achieve optimal results. Treatments are usually scheduled about 4 to 6 weeks apart. Some patients see results immediately, while it can take up to 3 months to see results. You are also encouraged to schedule a maintenance procedure at least once a year to maintain your results.

A note from Cleveland Clinic

“Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that can improve the appearance of your skin. Talk to your healthcare provider about microneedling if you have acne scars, stretch marks or other skin concerns. It’s a safe outpatient procedure. Most people need multiple treatments over several months to achieve their desired results.”

Botox is a formulation of botulinum toxin Type A used as a neurotoxin injection to reduce dynamic facial wrinkles by temporarily blocking nerve signals to muscles, and it typically produces visible smoothing for about 3–4 months. This article explains what to expect after a single treatment, the usual onset and peak timelines, and why individual results often range from roughly 2 to 6 months, depending on physiological and procedural factors. Many readers want a clear timeline and practical steps to extend results; this guide provides concise timelines, a quick comparison of common treatment areas, and evidence-aligned aftercare and scheduling strategies. You will learn how metabolism, muscle mass, dose, and treatment area change longevity, plus actionable maintenance habits that support longer intervals between sessions. The article maps to four focused sections: typical duration and timeline, factors that influence longevity, how to maximize and extend results, and how often to schedule treatments for maintenance. Throughout, targeted terms like "botox duration," "botox results timeline," and "factors affecting botox longevity" are used to make clinical explanations and practical advice easy to scan and apply. What Is the Typical Duration of Botox Results? Botox typically lasts 3–4 months; individual responses can vary from about 2 to 6 months depending on dose, muscle activity, and biology. The mechanism is straightforward: botulinum toxin blocks acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction, reducing muscle contraction and smoothing dynamic lines until nerve terminals recover. Understanding onset, peak, and fade helps set expectations and plan maintenance appointments. Below is a quick reference comparing common facial treatment areas and their usual duration ranges. Different treatment areas show predictable variation in longevity based on muscle size and use.

How To Prepare For Botox: Essential Pre-Treatment Guidelines You Must Know Botox is a cosmetic injection using Botulinum Toxin Type A that relaxes targeted facial muscles to smooth dynamic lines and improve facial symmetry. Following clearly defined pre-treatment guidelines enhances the cosmetic outcome and supports a smooth experience. This guide explains what medications and supplements to pause, which lifestyle changes matter, how to prep your skin, and a practical day-of checklist so you arrive ready and informed. You will learn why certain drugs increase bleeding risk at a microvascular level, which topical products or in-office treatments to avoid, and simple disclosure and hydration steps that improve safety and comfort. The article covers medication/supplement stop-times, lifestyle windows for alcohol and exercise, skin-condition criteria for proceeding, and a concise day-of checklist optimized for quick answers. What Medications and Supplements Should You Avoid Before Botox? Medications and supplements that impair platelet function or coagulation can affect the injection site. Stopping these agents for an appropriate window supports optimal healing and improves both immediate appearance and the injector's ability to treat precisely. Below is a short prioritized list of the highest-risk items and one-line stop-times for quick reference, followed by a more detailed table that maps common entities to their impact and recommended stop intervals. Understanding the physiological mechanism behind each recommendation helps you discuss safe plans with prescribers when needed. Common high-risk items to consider stopping before treatment: NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen) : stop 3–7 days before to reduce platelet inhibition. Aspirin : stop 7–10 days before, only if medically approved by prescriber. High-dose fish oil/Vitamin E : stop 7–14 days before due to anticoagulant effects. The following table summarizes representative medications and supplements with suggested stop-times and context.
